TAZ & Sierra Marlins Partnership – Frequently Asked Questions
Why is TAZ partnering with the Sierra Marlins?
This partnership gives TAZ swimmers access to expanded coaching expertise, year-round training opportunities (a common request in our surveys), and stronger program development, especially valuable while we continue to operate without our own pool. The Marlins are a premier USA Swimming club in our area, and this collaboration helps us offer the highest-quality experience to our athletes.
Does this mean TAZ is merging with the Sierra Marlins?
No. TAZ is not merging, dissolving, or becoming part of the Sierra Marlins.
TAZ remains its own independent team with its own board, identity, traditions, and mission. This partnership simply allows us to share expertise and resources that benefit both swimmers and coaches. Taz will always be Taz.
Will TAZ keep its own identity and culture?
Absolutely. TAZ’s culture is core to who we are and that will not change. Coach Eddie and Coach Alec both grew up in this local swim community and deeply understand what makes recreation swim and each team unique. Their goal is to enhance what we already do well, not replace it.
Will practices, meets, or team requirements change because of this?
Day-to-day TAZ operations for the summer season will remain the same.
The partnership adds options, not obligations. Families may see:
-
More practice planning, coaching consistency, and communication
-
Optional shared opportunities with the Marlins in the offseason (clinics, fall team, optional offseason programs)
-
Stronger long-term development for swimmers who want to grow in the sport.
No swimmer will be required to join any Marlins programs.
Will TAZ still focus on being a fun, community summer team?
Yes! TAZ will always be a community-first rec team. The goal of the partnership is to enhance the swimmer experience during the summer, not shift toward a strict year-round model. Our coaches are committed to keeping practices productive, supportive, and age-appropriate while having fun. But for those swimmers looking for off-season training opportunities, this partnership will help facilitate that.
What does this mean for my swimmer?
More support, more consistency, and more opportunities. Specifically:
-
Strong technical coaching
-
More season and practice planning
-
Enhanced communication
-
Options for offseason skill-building through Marlins clinics and Fall Team(optional)
-
More training and mentorship opportunities for our own junior coaches
Does partnering with the Marlins mean expectations or intensity will increase?
No. The rec program will stay true to its mission. That said, swimmers who want to push themselves will have excellent coaching and pathways to grow. Swimmers who want a fun, summer-focused experience will continue to get exactly that.
Who will be leading the team day to day?
-
Head Coach: Eddie Akbary, responsible for coaching leadership, deck presence, and overall swimmer development.
-
Swim Programs Manager: Alec Abrams, supporting practice plans, coach development, communication, and coordination with Marlins where relevant.
-
TAZ Board: Stays fully in place and continues overseeing all operations, finances, and team direction.
Why hire coaches who also coach for the Sierra Marlins?
The Coaching Committee sought the very best coaches to guide our team, and that process naturally led to Coach Eddie and Coach Alec. They each bring deep experience from both rec and competitive swimming and most importantly, both understand and respect TAZ’s history and unique culture. Their Marlins background ensures we’re aligned with the best coaching practices in the region, while still fully committed to Taz’s traditional rec-swim priorities like fun, community, and summer competition.
Will any coaches or staff be replaced?
No. Eddie and Alec are additions, not replacements. Their roles strengthen our coaching team and give us more leadership capacity. They’ll also mentor our assistant and volunteer coaches, helping us build depth and ensure a consistent experience for swimmers. We will be sending out information regarding Assistant and Volunteer Coach hiring for the 2026 season in the coming days. We will review applications and conduct interviews over Winter Break (in-person and by Zoom).
Will TAZ still run its own Fall & Spring Clinics?
Yes, and Coach Eddie will be on deck this year! Alec will help with planning and coaching coordination to ensure the clinic is strong, fun, and well-structured. In addition to the traditional Sunday Taz clinic, swimmers will have the option in participating in Marlins clinics.
Does this affect TAZ’s long-term goal of obtaining a new aquatics facility in El Dorado Hills?
No. Our long-term goal remains the same. This partnership simply gives TAZ swimmers additional high-quality training options while we work toward that future.
What if I still have questions or concerns?
We welcome them! Families will have multiple opportunities to meet Coach Eddie and Coach Alec, including at the holiday movie event on December 14 and upcoming meet-and-greet sessions. The board is also available anytime for questions. Email [email protected] or find us on deck!
